The True Value of Your Membership
The CFPC is here to support you, as a member, with certification and high standards, development and learning opportunities, and support programs that help you provide the highest-quality health care to your patients. High standards
High standards
The CFPC helps you meet the highest quality standards for care in Canada. We encourage and support high standards of medical education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in all 17 Canadian medical schools. We accredit the family medicine residency training programs. We also set high standards for lifelong competency, developing a range of programs and services for continuing professional development (CPD).
CCFP—Through achieving and maintaining the Certification in the College of Family Physicians (CCFP) designation, members commit to the highest standards of practice. CFPC members are the only physicians who have the privilege of obtaining and maintaining a CCFP.
FCFP—The CFPC awards the Fellowship designation (FCFP) to members who have been awarded a CCFP and who distinguish themselves through outstanding contributions to their communities, their colleagues, and the discipline of family medicine. CFPC members are the only physicians who have the privilege of obtaining and maintaining an FCFP.
CACs—Certificates of Added Competence (CACs) provide a means of recognizing enhanced areas of expertise achieved and maintained by some family physicians. Members who hold CACs are a valued resource to other family physicians and to their patients. CFPC members are the only physicians who have the privilege of obtaining and maintaining a CAC. -
Development and learning
Development and learning
CFPC membership guides your professional development by providing quality continuing professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning.
Mainpro+® (Maintenance of Proficiency) is the CFPC’s program designed to support and promote family physicians’ CPD. You can also use Mainpro+ to document and monitor your personal CPD learning goals.
Canadian Family Physician (CFP), a peer-reviewed family medicine journal, is the official publication of the CFPC. Delivered to members monthly, CFP ensures that practitioners, researchers, educators, and policy makers are informed about current issues and are in touch with the latest thinking in family medicine.
The Self Learning™ Program, which enables you to evaluate your knowledge of current topics in the medical literature, is published six times a year and is available online and in print.
Pearls™ are self-directed, evidence-based, practice reflection exercises that facilitate the integration of new knowledge and skills and are eligible for Mainpro+ certified credits.
Linking Learning exercises are self-administered, semi-structured exercises. They challenge you to look at day-to-day activities as learning opportunities.
Family Medicine Forum (FMF) is the annual CFPC event that offers a wide variety of CPD opportunities, many of which are eligible for Mainpro+ credits. Members receive preferred registration rates. -

CFPC members are awarded over $500,000 each year for research and awards. The CFPC’s Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) funds hundreds of awards, grants and scholarships to family physicians, medical students, and residents to support learning, continuing education, and research in family medicine.
Advocacy
We are the voice of family medicine in Canada. We advocate for you by actively promoting family medicine and primary care to elected officials and other decision makers. By way of our discussion papers, policy statements, and government relations, and representation on national committees and forums, we respond to emerging issues in health care that affect family medicine. Chapters
We support you locally with our provincial Chapter offices. The CFPC and the provincial Chapters work with federal and provincial governments, other health care organizations, and family medicine academic and research communities. Chapters host Annual Scientific Assemblies (ASAs) to provide valuable CPD sessions, programs, and networking. Your Chapter office has many opportunities for engagement and collaboration via special interest committees, supports, and networking. Members with specific needs
Teachers – The CFPC provides resources to support teachers involved in providing quality family medicine training Canada. Learn more about the Section of Teachers (SOT) and what they can do for you.
Researchers – CFPC members depend on evolving evidence every day to support how they care for their patients. Through our research department and the Section of Researchers (SOR) we produce, synthesize, and transfer the results of research—the evidence—into best practice approaches to patient care. Special Interests – The Member Interest Groups Section (MIGS) support family physicians in comprehensive care family practices with various programs that address areas of special interest to our members. Learn more about the different committees and what they can do for you.
Early-Career – The First Five Years in Family Practice (FFYFP) Committee addresses some of the key challenges identified by newer members, and assists them with resources and both national and provincial Facebook groups for peer networking. Residents – The Section of Residents (SoR) serves as liaison between the CFPC and family medicine residents throughout Canada, and is the voice of the CFPC’s Resident members. Learn more about what the CFPC provides you, a resident in family medicine.
